December 2

Depending upon our plans for the day and the weather outside we should always be dressed for the occasion. Is it a casual day or does the day call for business attire? Are we trying to make a good first impression with a new boss or first date or does the occasion call for a “what you see is what you get”? Being dressed for the occasion can set the tone for the rest of the day.

Dress codes have drastically changed over the years for business, school, exercise, church and just about every other venue we could discuss. As a young boy growing up I can remember Sunday mornings and getting ready for church. On a number of occasions I was sent back to my room to change what I had chosen for something more appropriate in the eyes of my parents. Wow, have times changed. From suits and dresses to shorts and t-shirts, jeans, slacks, flip flops and whatever else is most comfortable to you!

Before you turn me off; this blog is not about legalistic issues of what a person should wear to church, so please take a deep breath and read on. I believe as God looks down on Sunday mornings (or for any morning) He is not so concerned with what a person is wearing on the outside, but what He sees we are wearing on the inside.

Col 3:12-15 And so, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 And beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.

His dress code is a matter of the heart! Because we are graciously chosen by God to be called His children and then to be lovingly placed within a chosen body of believers to express His glory we must come dressed for the occasion. He has granted us compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience through Jesus Christ and He calls for us to put on the Lord Jesus Christ that we might extend to others what He has given to us freely. What finalizes our attire and coordinates the rest of our outfit is His love! Love is the perfect bond of unity! We know that we are dressed for the occasion when we experience the peace of Christ ruling our hearts and the body of Christ is worshipping and serving in perfect unity.

We are a new creation in Christ Jesus and the old things have passed away, behold all things have become new. This being said we must remind ourselves to put off the old in order to put on the new. Col 3:8-11 But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him 11 — a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all.

Every day we should put on the new self! Every day we should be renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created us! Are you dressed for the occasion or are you putting on those things that you used to wear? Look for the evidence of your attire. Is there peace and unity? If not you need to go back to your prayer closet!
